Amalapuram Municipality is 3rd largest ULB in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. It is spread over an area of 7.02 Sq.KMs. with a population of 53,231 (2011 Census). It is known as KONASEEMA and District Head Quarters.

It is located 520 Kms., from Capital City and 65 Kms., from District Head Quarters. It was established as Amalapuram Municipality in the year 1940. There are 4 zones and 30 Election wards in this Municipality.
Topography:
Amalapuram is located at 16.5833oN 82.0167oE. It has an average elevation of 2 meters (9feet).
Climate and Rainfall:
Amalapuram Town, in general, has a tropical climate, winters last from November to February, while summers last from March to June. The annual rainfall is 1100 mm, most of it received during the months of July to September.
Demography:
The population of the Town which was 51444 in 2001 increased to 53231 in 2011 with an increase of 2.39% in the decade. The sex ration is 1010 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate is 76%, 79% of the male population and 73% of the female population are literate.
Economy:
Amalapuram is one of the important Commercial Centre in East Godavari District, being surrounded by number of villages whose activity is mainly agriculture. The major crops cultivated here is Paddy. Other corps that are grown here are Coconut and Sugar cane. The vegetation of most famous Brinjals, ladies fingure have its native here. Other vegetables include Chillies, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Sweet Gourd, Indian Broad Bean. All types of leafy vegetables are grown here. The soil here is of mixed varieties making it suitable to grow many crops. Bananas are extensively grown in and around Amalapuram though its productivity declined gradually. Hence, there is busy commercial activity for the agricultural produce.
Environmental Issues:
The weather is hot and humid with a tropical climate. The town experiences all the three seasons ie., summer, winter &Rain. The climate is reasonable cold in winters and hot during summers. In Amalapuram the winds are mostly dry, warm and Generally light throughout the year. The predominant wind direction in the city and surrounding areas is mostly in North West. The Major seasons are as follows:-
Winter:- The Cold Weather commences early in December and comes to an end in the middle of March. The Temperature in winter season which is generally during November to March is as low as 18.5 Degree Celsius.
Summer:- The hot weather sets in and lasts until the middle of june. The average wind velocity is 3-24 km/hour. The hot wind greatly affects human comfort during this season. In summer, the maximum temperature reaches 51o Celsius whereas minimum temperature reaches 34o Degree Celsius.
Monsoon:- Soon after Mid June, the rainy season commences and continues till the end of October, the beginning of this season occurs when a storm from the Bay of Bengal passes over Andhra Pradesh. The average annual rainfall is about 1100mm.
Post Monsoon:- An Important feature of the retreating monsoon season n Andhra Pradesh
is the invasion of tropical cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal, at about 12N latitude. Andhra Pradesh is also influenced by the Typhoons originating in the South China Sea. The maximum frequency of the tropical cyclones in Andhra Pradesh is during September-November. These Cyclones are essential for the maturing of paddy, and are required for the moistening of the soil for the cultivation of Rabi crops.
Urban Poor:
As per the Slum survey, there are 33 notified slums in Amalapuram with a total population of 15,298. The slum pockets are scattered in different localities of the City mainly in the Outskirt portion of the city.
History & Culture:
Amalapuram is a town, Municipality and Revenue Division in East Godavari District in the State of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is 60 KM from Greater Rajahmundry City. It is at the head of the Konaseema delta, the triangle formed by the Waters of the Godavari River. The delta’s black cotton soil is very fertile and crops including coconut and rice are grown in it. Kakinada and Rajahmundry are towns close to Amalapuram. It is third biggest in East Godavari after Rajahmundry and Kakinada cities. It is the Lok Sabha Constituency in which the former Speaker Sri Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi was elected. Amalapuram has temples to Venkateswara Swamy, Subrahmanyeswara Swamy, Chandramouliswara Swamy, and Chenna Malleswara Swamy. The Town is known for vedic culture.
