About Punganur Municipality

Punganur Municipality is 3rd largest ULB in the Chittoor District of A.P it is spread over an area of16.53Sq.Km. with a population of 54746(2011 Census). It is known for/famous for its Milching Cows, Tamarind and Tomato Business.
Location:
 It is located 533Kms from Capital City and 72Kms from District Headquarters. It was established as 2nd grade Municipality  in the Year 1985.There are 5 Zones and 24 Election wards in the Municipality.
Topography:
Punganur town is located at 1300 –5’ N latitude and 780 0-32’ E latitude in the estreame western part of Chittoor District. 24K.ms from Madanapalli and  72 K.Ms to District Head quarters, On NH – 219 and MSL of the town is 2386fts .The main line of Madras Bombay Trunk Road having enough passengers and good transport of RTC and Private traffic run often to meet the needy situation of the public.
Climate and Rainfall:        
 The climate of the Punganur town is very pleasant over during summer season. The south – West monsoon tappers off by the end of September and North – East Monsoon generally abrades by the middle of the December. The Winter month s of December, January and February are cold. The average Rainfall is about 7.86 cms in a year . The Maximum temperature  is 32.5oC and minimum temperature is 14.4oC
Demography:
 The Population of the Town which was 44314 in 2001 increased to 54746 in 2011 with an increase of 19.05% in the last decade. The literacy rate is 69.38% ,75.14% of the male population and 64.28% of the female population are literate.
Economy:
Most of the People depending on Agricultural, Tamarind Business, Milching Activities

In Punganur Municipality Notified poor Slums are :13 Nos and Non – Notified Slums are : 20, total 33 Slums at present. Most of the peoples are depending on tamarind and Tomato labour works.
History:
 Punganuru has very ancient history. It was established as “VALANARAYANA CHATURVEDI MANGALAM”  DURING 1610 A.C and later on it was know as PULINAADU. It was ruled by no of kingdoms like Chola Dinesty, Vidhambulu, Rastrakutulu and Pandyas up to 1308.From 1308 to 1510 it was under the Rule of Jamindhaari ( Generation of Pandyas). During 1781 the constitution went into the hands of Tippusulthan and afterwards British Kingdom rules from 1830 to 1948. The last Jamindhary Rule was under Veera Basava Chikka Rayalu ( who has expired during 1965). The Jamindhary Ruling was abolished during 1948.
 Another stories say that the name of the town is derived from the name of a lady PUNGAMMA who has sacrified her life in the trial of saving the people.Once she protected the Tank Bund from breech out and saved the lives of the people. She struggled her self lonely through out the night at last she lost her life. The tank also named on her name PUNGAMMA CHERUVU  after that incident she is being worshiped as goddess by the people of Punganur.
