Pithapuram Municipality is 2nd Grade ULB in the East Godavari district of A.P. it is spread over an area of 19.57 Sq. Kms. With a population of 54,859 (2011 census). It is known for /famous for its Pilgrimage Center.
Location:
It is located 212 Kms. from Capital city and 20 Kms. from District Head quarters. It was established as 2nd Grade Municipality in the year1957.
Climate and Rainfall:
Pithapuram Town, in general, has a tropical climate, winters last from November to February, while summers last from March to June. The annual rainfall is 178 mm, most of its received during the months of July to September.
Demography:
The population of the town which was 50103 in 2001 increased to 54,859 in 2011 with an increase of 9.49 % in the last decade. The sex ration is 1017 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate 67.43% of the male population and 64.01% of the female population are literate.
History & Culture:
Pithapuram is home to a dynasty. The Pithapuram Kings ruled the area for long. They established the Pithapuram Raja Government Degree College in Kakinada. These Kings also gave lands to the missionaries for the establishment of a century old humanitarian hospital (Christian Medical Centre).
Missionaries of the Canadian Baptist Mission established their medical enterprise here in the form of the famed hospital Christian Medical Centre. CMC, Pithapuram was known for its quick and healing touch since the eighteenth century.
