Mandapeta Municipality is 5th largest ULB in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. It is spread over an area of 21.65 Sq.KMs. with a population of 53,588 (2011 Census). It is known for / famous for Rice Milling Activity, Poultry Industry and Animal Husbandry for huge Milk Production.
Mythological Stories of Mandapeta:
Mandavya was a sage, who according to Hinduism, was lived in Mandapeta in vedic times, was wrongly punished by the king by being impaled. This occurred as the chief of a band of robbers had hidden their stolen goods in a corner of his hermitage, when he was in deep contemplation and he was wrongly assumed to have stolen the goods. Lord Yama gave him this punishment for having tortured birds and bees in his childhood. In response, Mandavya cursed the Dharma, as his punishment exceeded the since committed as an ignorant child. Therefore he cursed him to be born in the mortal world. It is also considered in myths Hinduism story that Mandavya Rishi is a son of Manu and his name is Manavya Rishi later his name change into Mandavya. Mandavya is a gothra of different castes.
Mandapeta was originally called Mandavyapuram which came from Mandavya, who is supposed to have stayed at this place, Narada Maharshi is supposed to have done Pratisthapana of the idol of “ Janardhana Swamy” in Radham Temple of Town.
According to Historical inscriptions on Mandapeta:
A copper inscriptions of with 3 leaves in a pot in 3 yards depth from soil while excavation for house foundation in Mandapeta in the year 1923. This inscription pertaining to King “Raja Raja Narendra”Taamra Patra Shasanam. This inscription belongs to the period of A.D 1052 – 1062, this inscription written by Nannayya Bhattu and scribed on copper leaves by Gandacharya. The inscription in the mingle of prose and poetic style. According to inscription, for sake of a solar eclipse, the King Raja Raja Narendra donated 3 gifted lands to a Brahmin who lived in Manda Village, his name was Ankayya. This old inscription translated by the famous Archeologist Dr. Nelapati Venkata Ramanayya. Name of Manda Village first encountered in history through this inscription.
The 3 gifted lands donated by King Raja Raja Narendra in which one was a house site which situated in pedha veedhi (Sri V.V.S.S.Chowdary E. MLA street) Southern side of kapileswarapuram (Potti Sriramulu) road of Mandapeta. Remaining two (2)lands were cultivated lands one in Mandapeta, another one at Gummileru.
According to this copper inscription Manda Village was an internal village in Jurisdiction of “Gudha vadi Vishaya” now presently existing as Ramachandrapuram Mandal. The boundaries of “Gudha vadi Vishaya” were Saptha Godavari River, Penumala (presently called as Penumalla near village of Vella, situated Draksharama - Kakinada road), Valluru. In ancient days the Saptha Godavari was tribute of river Godavari which flowed in this area, now which is an extinct river and flow as Palial (under ground river – Antarvahini).
Location:
It is located 490 Kms., from Capital City (Hyderabad), 217 KMs from New capital ie. Amaravathi and 45 Kms., from District Head Quarters ie Kakinada. It was established as Mandapeta Municipality on October 1st 1958. There are 29 Election wards in this Municipality.
Topography:
Mandapeta is located at 16.52oN 81.56oE. It has an average elevation of 15.8496meters (52feet). Mandapeta is in a Delta area. Main Soil of Town is alluvial (clay loamy) soil.
Climate and Rainfall:
Mandapeta Town, in general, has a tropical climate, winters last from November to February, while summers last from March to June. The annual rainfall is 125 mm, most of it received during the months of July to September.
Demography:
The population of the Town which was 47,638 in 2001 increased to 53,588 in 2011 with an increase of 12.50% in the decade. The sex ration is 1001 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate is 62%, 65% of the male population and 59% of the female population are literate.
Economy:
Mandapeta is Main Commercial and Entertainment centre around 50 villages. It has the biggest animal husbandry facility in India. Most of the population is employed in agriculture or related industries but a sizeable population engages in trade and small scale industries. Mandapeta is a Rice Bowl of East Godavari because of land of enormous number of Rice Mills.
Environmental Issues:
The weather is hot and humid with a tropical climate. The town experiences all the three seasons ie., summer, winter &Rain. The climate is reasonable cold in winters and hot during summers. In mandapeta the winds are mostly dry, warm and Generally light throughout the year. The predominant wind direction in the city and surrounding areas is mostly in North West. Winter:
The Cold Weather commences early in December and comes to an end in the middle of March. The Temperature in winter season which is generally during November to March is as low as 18.5 Degree Celsius.
Summer:
The hot weather sets in and lasts until the middle of june. The average wind velocity is 3-24 km/hour. The hot wind greatly affects human comfort during this season. In summer, the maximum temperature reaches 51o Celsius whereas minimum temperature reaches 34o Degree Celsius.
Monsoon:
Soon after Mid June, the rainy season commences and continues till the end of October, the beginning of this season occurs when a storm from the Bay of Bengal passes over Andhra Pradesh. The average annual rainfall is about 1100mm.
Post Monsoon:
An Important feature of the retreating monsoon season n Andhra Pradesh is the invasion of tropical cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal, at about 12N latitude. Andhra Pradesh is also influenced by the Typhoons originating in the South China Sea. The maximum frequency of the tropical cyclones in Andhra Pradesh is during September-November. These Cyclones are essential for the maturing of paddy, and are required for the moistening of the soil for the cultivation of Rabi crops.
Urban Poor:
As per the Slum survey, there are 20 notified slums in Mandapeta with a total population of 19,437. The slum pockets are scattered in different localities, mainly in the Outskirt portion of the town.
Culture:
Mandapeta is a Municipal Town in East Godavari District in the State of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is 40 KM from District Head Quarters Kakinada City. It is a prominent area of delta region, besides bank of the Godavari River. The delta’s black cotton soil is very fertile and crops rice are grown in it. Kakinada and Rajahmundry are cites close to Mandapeta Town. Mandapeta Town has famous “Animal Husbandry Research Centre” in every year conduct State level Competitions on Dairy, Bullock Cots in this town and select best Milk Product verity of Cow and Buffalo in India to encourage Milk productivity of State.
